november 19, 2009: "The Collector" by shang

He lives under a train station. He drinks, he smokes, he has a suitcase full of body parts. Kids love him. Doubt his existence at your peril.

After many long months in post, Sweet and Sour is proud to finally release "The Collector," a darker piece that examines the true origin behind our childhood fears. Many thanks to all our collaborators, including those at Freewater, who helped make this film possible. Check out the final product here.

Remember, a crowbar means never having to say you're sorry.

august 29, 2009: "and such is the story of our world..." by shang

The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good-natured, she thought: still it had VERY long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt that it ought to be treated with respect.

'Cheshire Puss,' she began, rather timidly, as she did not at all know whether it would like the name: however, it only grinned a little wider. 'Come, it's pleased so far,' thought Alice, and she went on. 'Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'

may 7, 2009: "Graduation" by shang

I’m sad.

I’ve never taken leaving friends very well. In fact, it took me the good part of two years to move past my friendships from high school and get a grip on myself. And now, I’m here again with that distant but familiar sinking feeling, dreading what’s inevitable. Of the familiar faces that make up our everyday lives, most I won’t see again for months, some for years, and a few for good. I find myself wondering if this will be the last time I hug a friend or embrace a loved one.

april 12, 2009: "Move" by sungho

Sweet and Sour is proud to present "Move," a piece that blends movement of body with movement of camera. "Move" is a short dance for camera piece that examines choreography without the parameters of the natural focus of the eye, transition moves, and time. The choreography style was inspired by Brian Puspos' piece to the same song. Check it out here.

april 5, 2009: "New Website Launch" by shang

After three long years, our site has finally recieved a much needed makeover. We have cleaned up our navigation to make it more user friendly, opened up the layout to give it more room to breathe, as well as added new service and blog sections. You can now also follow us on facebook, youtube, vimeo, twitter, and tumblr. We hope this new layout will ease our transition into the real world (and failing economy) as we prepare to complete our time here at Duke and move into more freelance work in advertising and creative media. In the meantime, we plan on finishing our four years at Duke strong by bringing you a few last memorable pieces before we go do battle with homelessness and starvation (see section "save us from unemployment"). Feel free to give us feedback!

april 5, 2009: "New Website Launch" by sungho

Remember when the PS3 came out four years ago? I do. It was actually a pretty memorable night for me. I stood in line at a local Walmart for nearly twenty-four hours for a chance to buy the PS3 with the intent on turning it for a fat profit. During my twenty four hour squat, I met a homeless guy who called himself Black. He was asking people entering the Walmart to buy him a beanie because his head was cold. We shared a beer and I listened to his poems about the struggle of life on the street, his constant loneliness, and his dreams for the future. It was one of the most inspiration times of my life. I also met a drug dealer and a recently retired member of the U.S. Army - both were carrying guns with them in line. Both knew the power of intimidation and both looked equally menacing. I was shocked at how similar two people from opposite walks of life could appear.

april 1, 2009 "Schick - Mow the Lawn" by shang

Mow that lawn! Trim that bush! Be sure to watch for the shaved cat at the end.

"A catchy tune touting the new Wilkinson Sword Quattro for Women Bikini, with a razor on one end and a waterproof bikini trimmer on the other, but certain racial stereotypes/imagery might muff... er, ruffle some feathers."

march 1, 2009: "Froshlife" by shang

Sure, I had always enjoyed making videos in high school with my friends, but I had never seriously considered film as a career until I participated in a school-wide film festival my freshman year at college. It was my first experience as an actual director as well as my first time running through all the motions of film production - from storyboarding and scheduling to color correction and green screen keying. Now with an excuse to skip class, we spent two weeks filming nonstop summer shots in the dead of winter, which we quickly found out can be quite... excruciating. It wasn't surprising that it wasn't long before we all despised the project with every ounce of our being still left unfrozen, and yet deep down we all had the same unspoken understanding that despite it all, it would be well worth it in the end. It definitely was worth it - enough so to convince me that film was what I wanted to do from that point on.

january 10, 2009: "Whopper Sacrifice" by shang

Fast-food chain Burger King has created "Whopper Sacrifice," a Facebook app that will give you a coupon for a free hamburger if you delete 10 people from your friends list.

Burger King has put out some interesting campaigns as of late ("Whopper Virgin," "Subservient Chicken"), but this one piques our interest because of how gleefully it pokes fun at our social-networking obsessions. "Now is the time to put your fair-weather Web friendships to the test," the Whopper Sacrifice site explains. "Install Whopper Sacrifice on your Facebook profile, and we'll reward you with a free flame-broiled Whopper when you sacrifice ten of your friends.

The funniest part: The "sacrifices" show up in your activity feed. So it'll say, for example, "Caroline sacrificed Josh Lowensohn for a free Whopper." Unfortunately, you can't delete your whole friends list and eat free (however unhealthily) for a week. The promotion is limited to one coupon per Facebook account.

Start sacrificing now at http://www.whoppersacrifice.com/

january 2, 2009: "Growing Up" by shang

What we hadn’t know about, back then, was pain.

Growing up is all about getting hurt. And then getting over it. You hurt. You recover. You move on. Odds are pretty good you're just going to get hurt again. But each time, you learn something. Each time, you come out of it a little stronger, and at some point you realize that there are more flavors of pain than coffee. There's the little empty pain of leaving something behind—graduating, taking the next step forward, walking out of something familiar and safe into the unknown. There's the big, whirling pain of life upending all of your plans and expectations. There's the sharp little pains of failure, and the more obscure aches of successes that didn't give you what you thought they would. There are the vicious, stabbing pains of hopes being torn up. The sweet little pains of finding others, giving them your love, and taking joy in their life as they grow and learn. There's the steady pain of empathy that you shrug off so you can stand beside a wounded friend and help them bear their burdens.
